It is hard to imagine how photographers
and videographers made do before Visual Departures introduced Flexfill
collapsible reflectors in 1982. Now a familiar tool of both studio
and location shooting, Flexfill is simply indispensible when light
is too contrasty for film or videotape. By "filling" shadows,
a well-placed Flexfill fits such subjects within the limited brightness-recording
range of film and tape.
Flexfill does much more than just reflect light, though. Now available
in five sizes and nine surfaces, it is used by thousands of professional
photographers, filmmakers, and videographers as a total lighting
control system. That following has inspired many imitations, but
none of them measure up to Flexfill.
Flexfill outperforms conventional reflectors in several ways. A
flexible, riveted spring-steel rim allows any Flexfill to be folded
into a circular package one-third its working size, for easy transportation
and compact storage. That twist-and-overlap design also means it
can be opened with a mere flick of the wrist.
Flexfill Reflectors are made to last, with tough, fade-free materials
securely stitched to the fabric sleeve that surrounds their rims.
Fabrics are all carefully inspected for any deviations, and when
we give you the dimensions of a Flexfill, they represent its useful
area. Cheap knockoff reflectors include the rim fabric in their
measurements, which greatly reduces their effective area!
The circular Flexfill is available in 20-, 38-, 48-, and
60-inch diameters. Each Flexfill comes with its own zippered nylon
carrying pouch, is fully guaranteed by Visual Departures - and is
made in America. It can be mounted on lightstands with the same Flexfill Adjustable
Holder that supports circular Flexfills.
One final note. With photographic equipment, as in much of life,
you get what you pay for. You should know that Visual Departures
was the first company to offer collapsible reflectors, and that
we work hard to insure the highest quality in our products and the
best service to the photographers who depend on them. Flexfill is
the collapsible reflector. Accept no substitutes!
•
Permits complete control of lighting contrast and quality, with
both natural and artificial illumination.
• Collapses to a package one-third its
working size for easy transportation and compact storage.
• Sets up and collapses in much less
time than rigid reflectors.
• All fabrics are carefully quality-
controlled to ensure batch-to-batch consistency.
• Comes with a zippered nylon pouch.
• Made in the U.S.A.
Collapsible lighting reflectors available
in four different sizes and nine different fabric surfaces and surface
combinations. Circular models measure 20 inches, 38 inches, 48 inches,
and 60 inches in diameter. All Flexfill reflectors can be mounted with the Flexfill adjustable holder, model FH-1.
Ideal for stationary, still life,
and portrait subjects, the Flexfill Adjustable Holder (shown right)
has a telescoping design that slides to fit 20-, 38-, and 48-inch
circular Flexfills. Flexible rubber grips provide a firm hold on
the rim of the reflector, while locking knobs hold each tubular
section in place. A standard 5/8-inch socket accommodates most lightstands,
and will accept a threaded screw-mount adapter for use on tripods.

Circular models measure 20 inches, 38 inches, 48 inches,

measures 28x58 inches. Surface material is securely
stitched to fabric sleeve surrounding flexible spring-steel
rim; rim bends so that reflector can be folded into
a package roughly one-third its in-use size. Can be
hand-held or mounted on standard light stands or tripods
with Visual Departures' Flexfill Adjustable Holder.

White:
The
standard reflector surface for filling shadows. Usually
placed on the side of the subject opposite the light
source, it bounces light back into the subject to
lower contrast.
Silver:
Similar in application to a white reflector,
but produces a more specular fill. Use it for brightening
shadows–especially important when moving a white
Flexfill closer would cause it to intrude into the
frame. Metallic Flexfills are all made with a high-grade
aluminized nylon.
Gold:
Similar in efficiency to silver, but adds warmth as
well as light to the subject. Outdoors on a sunny
day, it can eliminate the blue cast open sky contributes
to shadows; indoors, it can warm up cool window light.
Minimizes the need for warming filtration.
Black
Absorber: Produces an effect just the reverse
of a reflector, reducing the amount of light reaching
the shadows–and creating higher lighting contrast.
Especially good for adding snap when soft ambient
light makes a subject appear flat. Made from a dead-matte
velvetlike fabric, it's also useful for "flagging"
– keeping unwanted stray light off lens and/or
subject.
Translucent:
Designed for placement between the light source and
subject to soften hard light. Reduces lighting contrast;
improves modeling. Made of sailcloth-like ripstop
nylon.
Silk:
Similar in its diffusing effect to our translucent
surface, but transmits twice as much light. Its less
heavy ripstop nylon reduces light by only .7 stop.
Use it when you need more light and want somewhat
harder shadows.
Black
Net: Also placed between source and subject,
but only to reduce the strength of the light, not
its quality. Use it the way you would a neutral density
filter on the camera; less light allows you to shoot
at wider apertures, for example. Ideal for controlling
lighting ratios, it is available in single (.8-stop
density) and double (1.5 stops) net.
